Home Birth Supply List
● 12 cotton/flannel receiving blankets
● 2 cotton baby hats
● Baby clothes – undershirt, sleeper
● 1 package newborn sized diapers
● 2 garbage bags and baskets/boxes to keep them open
● 12+ washcloths, and a pot or kettle to boil water, for warm compresses
● Space heater – if your home is cold and cannot be warmed quickly
● Two LARGE zippered freezer bags (for your placenta)
● Large/overnight sanitary pads (not Always brand) OR consider disposable underwear (i.e. Depends)
● Clean towels
● Ibuprofen (Advil) 200 mg tablets and acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500 mg tablets
● Digital Celsius thermometer (not the kind that goes in the ear)
● 1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
● Infant car seat, in case a trip to hospital is necessary.
● We will bring disposable blue pads and a perineal bottle.
To Protect your Bed, Make it up as Follows:
● Waterproof layer (fitted plastic sheets, vinyl tablecloths, vinyl shower curtain liners)
● Fitted sheet
● Flat sheet
● Waterproof layer (Be sure to cover your mattress all the way down the sides!)
● Fitted sheet
● Flat sheet
Once baby is born, we remove the top layer of flat sheet, fitted sheet, and waterproof layer, and then
you’ll have a clean, dry bed.
Consider having an extra plastic sheet and towels available, as you may not give birth in the bed.
Other Non-Essential Items
● Extra pillows. (You may choose to cover these with plastic bags.)
● Extra plastic sheet and towels, in case you do not give birth in the bed.
● A crock pot or other pot to boil water in for warm compresses
● Lip balm
● Notebook for labour notes
● Mirror, if you want to watch the birth
● Camera
Food and Beverage
It is important to have plenty of food for during labour and the immediate postpartum period for
yourself, your partner, and your support people. Keep those energy levels up!
