About Midwives
● Midwives promote nor mal childbirth, appropriate use of technology and the
prevention of health problems.
● Midwives provide primary care to clients with low-risk pregnancies, labours and deliveries.
● Midwives provide 6 weeks of postpartum care to parents and newborns.
● Midwives offer choice of birth place - at home or in the hospital.
● Midwifery is a legislated profession, governed by the college of Midwives of Ontario
and integrated into Ontario's health care system.
● Two Ontario universities offer a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery.
● Most midwifery clients do not need to see a physician during their care. If a concern arises
during your care, your midwife will work with doctors and nurses as needed.
● Midwifery care is paid for by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

About Midwifery Care
● Midwives provide complete prenatal care including blood tests, ultrasounds and genetic screening.
● Visits are a half hour to allow time for examinations, questions, counselling and education.
● Prenatal visits are monthly until 28 weeks pregnancy, every 2 weeks until 36
weeks pregnancy and then weekly until delivery.
● 24 hour, 7 day a week on-call is provided for urgent concerns and for clients in labour.
● A midwife known to you attends your labour and birth and a second midwife attends
the birth to assist and provide care to your baby.
● Midwives help individuals give birth with power and dignity.
● Midwives provide continuous support during labour and the first hours postpartum.
●Postpartum care continues for 6 weeks for parent and newborn.
